![]() ![]() I am just now coming back to try to teach myself to play. ![]() Many years ago I took music lessons as a child for a year or two. For whatever reason I did not learn the alphabet with positional significance. But it would really help me a lot to start referencing them by number rather than by letter. It may appear that I am spending too much time on this. ![]() Is it simply an arbitrary assignment, as in they could have just as easily been called by numbers, but it is in essence by convention that they are referenced as letters? How do they reference notes in Russia or China (places where the Latin alphabet is foreign)? I expect that there could be some problems with doing this, so I would like to explore what those problems may be to decide if I should go ahead with this or not. I want to know what the reasons are behind using letters in reference to keys or notes rather than numbers? The reason I want to know is I think it may make sense for me to learn them as 1-7 rather than A-G just because of the way my brain works and the patterns that are already there. So the main question, to elaborate on the thread title. It is possible I should start more than one thread for all of this, but I don't want to clutter up the forums with a bunch of posts. I will then include some background and some additional questions. I tend to be somewhat verbose, so I will begin by asking my main question. ![]()
